Todaiji – 11 “Nigatsu-do”

"nigatsu-do" February Hall

In this February Hall, two statues of Goddess of Kannon are placed.  They are bronze images and each one has eleven faces.

However, those images are strictly kept in secret so that we cannot see from outside.

This hall is famous for  a ceremony held in February  by lunar calender.

12 monks draw water from the sacred well and offer it to the Goddess of Kannon.

It is held in the night and big torches are used to light up stairs and its balcony.

It is so dynamic ceremony.  If you have a chance to stay in Japan in March, please seize a chance to experience it.
