Todaiji – 05 the Great Buddha Statue
The great Buddha, “Vairocana Buddha,” has constructed in the middle of the 8th century.
The Great Buddha is called “Daibutsu” in Japanese.
It took many years to complete. It is a bronze statue.
I have heard it is the biggest bronze stature in the world, but it is not sure. However, it is “one of ” the biggest bronze statue in the world. It was originally plated with gold.
It was a state project to construct it. The emperor, called “Shomu” was set up “provincial temple system” and he ordered to make this great Buddha as a symbol of the main temple, Todaiji.
This “Vairocana Buddha” means the illuminating Buddha, and it offers salvation to all beings in the universe.
The emperor “Shomu,” hoped that this great image would bring the peace to all in the world, even to animals and plants. He hoped that this world would be perfectly harmonious world that the Sutra depicted.
Please take a look at hand signs.
Buddha’s right hand position means “blessing and protection.” It says to us “Do not fear.”
Left hand positon, open hand, palm side up, represents charity. It says to us “I will grand your wishes.”
The Buddha is sitting for other beings to offers salvations and grand our wishes.
